This is why creative residencies are so vital. They take us out of our hot, urban apartments and out of our busy, chore-laden lives. The best residencies for many of us are situated in natural settings that are purely inspirational in and of themselves, much lass as a result of the institutions or art centers hosting us.

Some house show hosts will have to take a percentage of the door cut to cover their costs, but in most situations, it’s the performing artist who ends up with the lion’s share. Playing a big ol’ fancy venue might be an impressive thing for a burgeoning band to brag about, but with all the staff and overhead costs, the bands won’t earn any money unless they’re able to fill it. To add more character to your drums, try panning each piece in your kit in a thoughtful way. This will help keep sounds from getting muddled and will be great for later when you need to differentiate instruments like the kick and bass.
