Course: The Art of Hip-Hop Production

I was met with a lot of pushback and resistance when I first started Muru. People didn’t really identify with the problem as it was somewhat technical and they thought I was trying to compete with streaming services by building a playlist tool. The word “crazy” was thrown around a few times, but once I got validation from a few investors and industry experts, the conversation changed, and those in my network were happy to start making introductions to the right people. I’m forever grateful for the first investors that took a leap of faith in Muru before I was able to prove that the tech worked.

The second course in the Faders Up series, Advanced Mix Techniques is structured quite differently from the first. Here, you’ll gain insights from renowned sound engineers, but it’ll be much more tightly focused, both on their personal sound-crafting techniques and the tried-and-true techniques that pertain to specific genres (hip-hop, rock, metal, pop, and cinematic orchestral). We even threw in an entire section on the basics of mastering as an added bonus.

Yet, part of the job of a book like this is to challenge you with new, scientific information about how sound works and help you wrap your head around it in practice. And this book does that admirably, covering topics ranging from psychoacoustics, cabling and different signal types, gain staging, and new developments in digital audio production. Mastering the information here will help you make better recordings and better mixes all around and provide you with the satisfaction of a mind expanded.

Sitting up in your chair, hold the djembe between your legs, angled behind them and underneath your chair. Your hands should be held out flat, parallel to the ground, with thumbs angled up to the ceiling a bit so they’re elevated from the rest of your hand.

Residencies last anywhere from six weeks to two years! And while artists are responsible for funding, grants are offered, and acceptance can be put on hold to obtain funding.

Notice how over the Dm7 chord we play the 5, 6, ♭7, and ♭3. It’s not uncommon to omit the root note when soloing over chord changes, or at least delay the arrival back to the root until the end of the solo for maximum resolution!

“Wait, we’re musicians, we don’t write agendas.” Ok, but that’s a great way to ensure you don’t get anything done. Being a good musician sometimes requires a little business sense, and I’ve found a clear agenda can really help. Knowing exactly what order we’re going to record in can make the whole thing so much smoother and more efficient. And laying it out a week in advance gives your bandmates and engineer a chance to prepare, make suggestions, or consider alternate approaches.

Some examples of past sessions include adding production magic to your tracks, arranging and finishing musical ideas, producing an EP, or getting help building an audience for your music. We’ll find you a Soundfly Mentor specifically suited to your project who will work with you to figure out what it takes to get it done. Just tell us a little bit about yourself to be matched with a mentor right away.

When you give people a chance to sign up for your mailing list, you’re automatically creating a filter for the people who will become your biggest fans and supporters. You can still target passive, part-time fans on social media and elsewhere, but the mailing list will remain a hub for active audiences. Sending out an email once every couple of months will set you apart from other bands and give your audience a sense that they’re connecting with you on a deeper level. So don’t forget to put out a nice looking sign-up sheet at your shows!

However, sometimes the music pours out too fast, or I have to cram a bunch of writing into a single night to meet some kind of deadline, then there’s less of an opportunity to analyze oneself and the only thing to do is trust that the little musical navigator will stop you from repeating yourself… Both methods are absolutely terrifying!
